Henry’s daughter Sophie met Sandra, who looked exactly like her, at school and spent time with her. They were convinced that they were twin sisters. Henry was shocked when he met Sandra and her mother and decided to find out what had happened.
Henry moved from Texas to Los Angeles when his daughter, Sophie, turned seven and was about to start second grade. “Okay, here we are. Your new school, Sophie. Are you excited?” he asked his daughter as he dropped her off.
“I think so…” Sophie replied, twirling her fingers around her skirt nervously. “What if no one likes me?”

“You’ll be fine. Just be nice to everyone, and if someone’s mean to you, you just go somewhere else. No starting fights, you know?” Henry added, kissing her forehead.
Sophie waved goodbye and walked into the school. She quickly found her class, and everyone else was already inside. But all the children’s eyes widened, and some even gasped when they saw her. She stopped at the door and looked around in confusion.
Her new classmates started to turn their heads between her and another girl sitting at the back. She tried to peek in and saw a blonde head. Suddenly, a boy shouted: “It’s Sandra’s clone!”
That’s when Sophie saw the girl at the back of the class and gasped. The girl looked just like her! Sandra stood up and stared at the new girl with her mouth open. “Wow! We look like twins!” she exclaimed and smiled widely.
Sophie immediately felt at ease and smiled at the girl as well. “Yes. But why? I don’t have any sisters,” she replied.
“Me neither! It’s just me and my mother,” Sandra said and skipped over to Sophie, taking her hand. “Come sit with me.”
They spent a few minutes talking, and other children also approached them. Then the teacher, Miss Carr, came in. “I think we have a new student today, Sophie Douglas. Come and say hello to her,” said her teacher, and suddenly, she let out a small “Oh.”
“Miss Carr, you look just like Sandra!” said a boy as Sophie walked to the front of the class.

“Hi, my name is Sophie. I love books and going to the beach with my dad. We moved here from Texas and I’m really looking forward to making new friends,” the little girl said and smiled at everyone. Miss Carr clapped her hands as the rest of the class followed suit.
“That’s great, Sophie. And it looks like you have a twin in our class. How cool! You can go sit down now. Well, today we’re going to learn about frogs…” Miss Carr immediately began her lesson.
Sophie and Sandra played all day with all of Sandra’s friends. They bonded faster than anyone could have imagined. When school was over, Sophie told her father all about Sandra and how they were alike.
After hearing about his new friend all week, Henry was curious to see her and decided to call Sandra’s mom to talk. They arranged a play date and decided to meet at McDonald’s a few days after Sophie’s first day at her new school. When Sandra and her mom, Wendy, walked in, Henry’s jaw dropped. He couldn’t believe that his daughter hadn’t been exaggerating.
The woman was also stunned to see Sophie. “Oh my God! Hi! You must be Sophie. Sandra has been telling me about you all week. You really do look like twins!” Wendy exclaimed with a big smile. The girls went out into the yard and the adults could finally talk.
“Hi, I’m Henry. Nice to meet you,” Henry said, shaking Wendy’s hand. They sat down in one of the booths and talked some more.
She echoed her opinion. “Wow, I can’t believe this. I’ve read about the counterparts, there has to be something more here,” Wendy commented as they watched the girls play.

“What do you mean?”
“Well, Sandra doesn’t know it yet, but I adopted her. Is Sophie biologically yours?”
“Yeah. I mean, my ex-wife, Irene, found out she was pregnant after we split up, and she had her. We raised her together, but she died a year ago, so I have full custody now. I was worried about Sophie, you know?” Henry chirped. “She just lost her mom, and I had to move here for work. It’s just too much of a change. But Sandra’s been a blessing. Sophie’s been smiling all week and talking about how much they have in common. I can’t thank her enough.”
“Where have you moved from?”
“From Texas. We lived in Dallas,” Henry replied.
“Hmmm…” Wendy said, resting her chin on her hand.
“What?” Henry wondered, frowning at the woman.
“I have a hard time saying this. But I think Sandra was born in Texas too,” Wendy revealed, licking her lips with her tongue in doubt. “I’ll have to check her birth certificate again. But is there any chance your late ex-wife had twins?”

“No… I wasn’t with her because of work. But no. It can’t be. I came back a week after she gave birth. I was already out of the hospital and met Sophie at her house. So there’s no way that could have happened,” Henry replied, his eyes blinking rapidly, trying to think.
“Were you and her having a good time?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, if she felt like you wouldn’t be there for her, maybe she thought having two daughters was too much,” Wendy suggested as carefully as she could.
“So, you’re saying she could have given up one daughter and kept the other?” Henry asked, still in disbelief that Irene would give up one of her girls for adoption. “We weren’t right together, and that’s why we broke up. But this is… I don’t know what else to say.”
“Is there any way to find out?” Wendy wondered again.
“I guess I could call the hospital and check things out…” Henry muttered, still in shock and running his fingers through his hair. Just then, the girls came back and said they were hungry, so this conversation would have to continue another day.

A few days later, he took Sophie to Wendy’s house and traveled back to Texas. He talked to the hospital staff and asked everything he could. Finally, a kind nurse took pity on him and discovered that Irene had given birth to two babies.
Unfortunately, Henry would never know why he made the difficult decision to give birth to a baby, but he suspected it was his fault.
I left her alone to give birth, and I wasn’t there for most of the pregnancy. This is my fault. She probably knew she was having twins and didn’t tell me.
But there was nothing he could do about the past. He could only move on and try to make amends. When he returned, he and Wendy took a DNA test for Sandra, which confirmed his suspicions. But Henry made it clear that Wendy was the child’s mother. He would never try to separate them.
The adults sat down with the girls and explained everything as best they could, which meant telling Sandra that she was adopted. But the twins screamed with joy and hugged each other, chanting, “We’re sisters! We’re sisters!”

Henry and Wendy could only laugh with them, glad that they were so happy. They had to navigate this delicate situation because Henry wanted to be a father to Sandra, but Wendy didn’t know how he would fit into Sophie’s life.

In the end, they decided to co-parent as if they were both legal parents, and it turned out amazing. The girls adapted to this new normal better than they did, and it was perfect.
One night, Sophie said something that surprised Henry. “Dad, why don’t you marry Wendy? Then she could be my mother too.”
“Oh, honey, that’s complicated. Wendy and I are just good friends,” he replied.
“I’ll never forget my mother. But I like her. I think she could be good for you too,” Sophie insisted.
Henry smiled. “We’ll see.”
But it was as if his daughter could predict the future. Over time, he and Wendy began dating. They were married when the girls were 12, and both became bridesmaids.
What can we learn from this story?
- You can’t change the past. Henry learned the hard way that you can’t change the past; you can only right the wrongs and look to the future.
- Some things happen for a reason. Henry and Sophie moved to Los Angeles, only to run into Sandra and Wendy. It seems like more than just a coincidence.
