A couple claims a restaurant punished them for being ‘bad parents,’ but the owner shares their side of the story.

Imagine enjoying a nice dinner at a restaurant after a tiring day, only to have a child throwing a tantrum or running around while their parents do nothing. We’ve all been there, right?

Toccoa Riverside Restaurant, a well-known spot by the Toccoa River in Georgia, has decided to tackle this issue. They’re now charging a fee for “adults who can’t control their kids,” which is mentioned at the bottom of the menu.

Not surprisingly, many parents are upset about this rule. The menu doesn’t say exactly how much the fee is, but some Google reviews suggest it’s usually around $50.

One reviewer shared, “The owner told me they were adding $50 to my bill because of my kids’ behavior. They were quietly watching a tablet until the food arrived, ate their meal, and then my wife took them outside while I paid. The whole experience left me disappointed.”

Another reviewer warned, “If you have kids, avoid this place. The owner was extremely rude and embarrassed us in front of everyone because our kids were ‘running through the restaurant’ – when they were just by the river. We were even told to ‘go to Burger King and Walmart’ and called bad parents.”

Tim Richter, the restaurant owner, explained that he introduced the extra fee a few years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic after a family with nine kids caused chaos in the restaurant. He didn’t charge them but gave a warning. “We expect parents to be responsible,” he said.

People have mixed reactions. Laura Spillman said, “That’s crazy. Really? I don’t think it’s a good idea because kids are adorable.” Meanwhile, Anne Cox felt the fee might encourage parents to take more responsibility.
