\nThe Franklin County courtroom in Ohio was so quiet that even the faint buzzing of the fluorescent lights sounded deafening.
\nEmma Caldwell stood beside her attorney, one hand gently supporting her eight-month pregnant belly. Exhaustion shadowed her face after weeks of sleepless nights, and she barely resembled the joyful bride who had walked into the same courthouse seven years earlier to marry Daniel Caldwell.
\nAcross the courtroom sat Daniel, rigid and expressionless in a tailored navy suit. His wedding ring was gone. Seated beside him was Vanessa Price \u2014 polished, confident, and visibly entertained by the entire situation. Every so often she leaned close to Daniel, whispering comments that made him smirk faintly.
\nJudge Margaret Whitaker lowered her glasses and reviewed the file before her.
\n\u201cMrs. Caldwell,\u201d she said carefully, \u201cyour petition states that you are requesting an immediate dissolution of the marriage and voluntarily relinquishing your rights to the marital residence, joint savings, both vehicles, and your husband\u2019s company shares. Soft murmurs spread through the gallery.
\nEmma\u2019s lawyer shifted uneasily. \u201cYour Honor, my client fully understands the consequences of\u2014\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019d like to hear directly from Mrs. Caldwell,\u201d Judge Whitaker interrupted.
\nEmma lifted her chin despite the exhaustion in her eyes.
\n\u201cYes, Your Honor,\u201d she replied quietly. \u201cHe can keep everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa burst into laughter.<\/p>\n

\"\"Not nervous laughter.
\nNot accidental laughter.
\nIt was cold, mocking, and filled with satisfaction.
\nDaniel immediately whispered, \u201cVanessa.\u201d
\nBut the damage had already been done. She lowered her hand too late, her grin still aimed directly at Emma.

\n\u201cSit down, Mr. Caldwell,\u201d the judge ordered sharply.
\nHe obeyed, but anger burned across his face.
\nEmma looked straight at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou already took the only thing that mattered.\u201d
\nVanessa smirked again, clearly amused \u2014 but this time Judge Whitaker slowly closed the file in front of her and rose from the bench.

\nEvery trace of color disappeared from Daniel\u2019s face.

\nDaniel gripped the edge of the table so tightly his knuckles turned white.
