Quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies. A whole life of scraped-together change.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think this should cover it,\u201d she said. \u201cI counted twice.\u201d<\/p>\n
For a second, I just stared at the bag. Then I glanced toward the kitchen, lit only by the open refrigerator.<\/p>\n
There was almost nothing in the fridge \u2014 just water bottles and a small pharmacy bag.<\/p>\n
That was when I realized what was going on here, and why it all felt so wrong.<\/p>\n
This pizza wasn\u2019t a treat.<\/p>\n
It was the one hot meal she could get without standing at a stove she probably didn\u2019t have the strength to use, trying to make something from the nothing in her fridge.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t worry about it.\u201d I leaned over to push the bag of coins back toward her. \u201cIt\u2019s already taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her brow furrowed. \u201cI don\u2019t want you getting in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n
I have no idea why I said what I said next. Maybe because lying felt easier than watching her count pennies into my hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s okay, really. I own the place,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
She studied me for a second, then relaxed. Her gaze dropped to my name tag.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell,\u201d she said, \u201cthank you, Dominic.\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded and set the pizza box on her lap. She opened it, closed her eyes, and smiled as the steam rolled up into her face.<\/p>\n
Watching her bask in the warmth coming off a pizza hit me harder than anything else that night.<\/p>\n
I stood there for another second, feeling useless.<\/p>\n
Then I mumbled good night and headed back out.<\/p>\n
I got into my car and pulled the door shut. The pizza warmer in the passenger seat buzzed faintly. Across the street, a porch light flicked on. I should\u2019ve put the car in drive and headed back to the shop.<\/p>\n
Instead, I just sat there with my hands on the wheel, staring at her dark windows.<\/p>\n
No lights, no heat, no food. Just that woman pretending she was \u201cperfectly fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
I picked up my phone and texted dispatch.<\/p>\n
Flat tire. Need 45 minutes.<\/i><\/p>\n
It was the first excuse that came to mind. I needed time. I\u2019d already decided I couldn\u2019t leave that old lady there like everything was fine.<\/p>\n
Then I started the car and drove two blocks to the police station I\u2019d passed on the way here. I could never have imagined that my actions would have terrible consequences.<\/p>\n
When I walked inside, the officer behind the desk looked me up and down and frowned.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou need something?\u201d<\/p>\n
I told him about the older woman in her cold, dark house, and how she said she\u2019d chosen medication over heat like that was just how things were now.<\/p>\n
When I finished, he leaned back slightly and asked, \u201cAnd you think she\u2019s in danger?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think someone who knows more than me should decide that,\u201d I said. \u201cBut yeah. I think if nobody checks on her, something bad could happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
He nodded once, picked up the phone, and called it in.<\/p>\n
He repeated the address and asked for a welfare check. Then he hung up and slid a clipboard toward me.<\/p>\n
\u201cNeed your name and number in case they follow up.\u201d<\/p>\n
I filled it out. My breathing had settled by then. I even smiled a little, convinced I\u2019d done the right thing.<\/p>\n
But what I saw when I drove past her house on the way back to the shop shattered that delusion.<\/p>\n
The ambulance was parked outside her house, lights flashing.<\/p>\n
Neighbors crowded the sidewalk. I slowed.<\/p>\n
Then two paramedics came through her front door, helping her between them. They were calm and controlled, but moving with urgency.<\/p>\n
The neighbors parted for them.<\/p>\n
Then her eyes found me.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou!\u201d She pointed at me with a trembling finger. \u201cThis is your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stepped closer. \u201cI was worried about you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI told you I was fine!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were freezing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI was managing!\u201d she snapped, and the force of it made her cough. \u201cThey\u2019re taking me out of my home because of you.\u201d<\/p>\n
One of the neighbors moved closer. \u201cHey,\u201d he said sharply. \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI got her help,\u201d I said. \u201cShe needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n
One of the paramedics glanced at me, then at the neighbors.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re concerned about hypothermia and her overall condition,\u201d he said. \u201cShe needs an evaluation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The woman looked small suddenly. Her eyes filled with tears, and it was awful because now she wasn\u2019t just angry. She was scared.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was fine,\u201d she whispered. \u201cThey\u2019re making it sound worse than it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re not,\u201d I said, quieter now. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t even get to the door.\u201d<\/p>\n
When they helped her into the ambulance, she said it one more time.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n
