The March air was freezing, and the wind cut straight through my hoodie as I stood on her back steps.<\/p>\n

A faint light flickered on somewhere deeper in the room.<\/p>\n
The house was colder than it was outside.<\/p>\n
An older woman sat in a worn chair, wrapped in layers of blankets. No TV, no sound\u2014just silence.<\/p>\n
She looked at the pizza box like it was something incredibly valuable.<\/p>\n
\u201cI keep the heat low,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cMedication comes first. It\u2019s the only thing I can\u2019t skip.\u201d<\/p>\n
She pushed a plastic bag of change toward me with shaking hands.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think this should cover it. I counted twice.\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t take it.<\/p>\n
I glanced into the kitchen.<\/p>\n
The fridge door was slightly open.<\/p>\n
Inside\u2014almost nothing. Just water and a small pharmacy bag.<\/p>\n
That was it.<\/p>\n
She wasn\u2019t ordering pizza for comfort \u2014 it was the only hot food she could get delivered, and she didn\u2019t have the strength to cook for herself.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s already taken care of,\u201d I said. \u201cYou don\u2019t owe anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
She hesitated. \u201cI don\u2019t want you getting in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI own the place,\u201d I lied. \u201cIt\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
She relaxed a little.<\/p>\n
I set the box in her lap. She opened it slowly, and when the warmth hit her face, she closed her eyes for a moment.<\/p>\n
Like she was holding onto it.<\/p>\n
I stepped outside and walked back to my car.<\/p>\n
But I didn\u2019t start the engine.<\/p>\n
I just sat there, staring at the steering wheel.<\/p>\n
Then I pulled out my phone.<\/p>\n

Flat tire. Need 45 minutes.<\/i><\/p>\n
I looked back at the house.<\/p>\n
Because what I decided to do next was something that would change both our lives.<\/p>\n
So I started the car.<\/p>\n
I delivered a pizza to an elderly woman. When I stepped inside her cold, dark house, I realized she was in trouble. So I made a decision I thought would help her. I didn\u2019t expect her to look me in the eye minutes later and say, \u201cThis is your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n

And standing on those back steps, I already had the feeling that something about this delivery wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n
The house was dark, and the yard was overgrown. I had a large pepperoni pizza balanced on one hand and my phone in the other, checking the order again in case I had the wrong place.<\/p>\n
The address was right. The note said: \u201cPlease knock loud.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis had better not be some kind of prank,\u201d I muttered as I rapped on the door.<\/p>\n
\u201cCome in.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stood there for a second, every instinct telling me this was how people ended up on the news.<\/p>\n
But I was already running behind, and the voice hadn\u2019t sounded threatening.<\/p>\n
So I opened the door.<\/p>\n
The kitchen was dim, lit only by the open fridge door. I stepped inside and shivered. It was colder inside than it was out on the steps!<\/p>\n
\u201cBack here,\u201d the voice called.<\/p>\n
I moved into a small living room.<\/p>\n
An older woman sat in a worn recliner, lit by a candle flickering on a side table. She was bundled up in so many blankets that it made her head seem almost comically small.<\/p>\n
Her eyes locked onto the pizza box in my hands.<\/p>\n
\u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d I said hesitantly, \u201care you\u2026 alright? It\u2019s pretty cold in here. Dark, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m perfectly fine. I keep the heat low because medication comes first. It\u2019s the only thing I can\u2019t skip.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then she leaned toward the little side table beside her and pushed a plastic sandwich bag toward me.<\/p>\n
It was full of coins.<\/p>\n
