When the emergency room receptionist heard the wheelbarrow squeak through the doors, she looked up expecting to see a child pushing a toy.

The squeak came again. Then the receptionist saw the girl’s hands wrapped around the metal handles and two tiny bundles tucked into the wheelbarrow beneath mismatched towels. One baby whimpered. The other barely moved.

She was wearing worn sneakers and a sweatshirt too big for her. Her face was flushed from the walk, but she didn’t cry.

“Where’s your mom, sweetheart?”

The girl swallowed. “At home. I couldn’t wake her.”

A nurse was already coming around the desk.

“For how long?”

The girl held up three fingers.

Three days.

The receptionist’s chair rolled backward as she stood. A second nurse pulled the emergency doors open while another crouched beside the wheelbarrow, careful not to frighten the child.

“Can I pick up the babies?”

The girl’s fingers tightened around the handles.

“Both?”

“Both,” the nurse said gently. “We’ll keep them together.”

Only then did she let go.

The twins were breathing, but the staff could tell immediately they needed care. Warm blankets appeared. Someone brought a small chair. Someone else asked the girl whether there was another grown-up at home.

She shook her head.

“Just Mommy.”

The nurse knelt so they were eye level. “Did somebody drive you here?”

“No.”

“You walked?”

The girl glanced at the wheelbarrow.

“I pushed.”

That answer changed everything.

While the twins were taken into treatment, the receptionist stayed beside her. The girl kept watching the doorway where the babies had disappeared, rubbing her palms against her sweatshirt as if she could still feel the weight of the handles.

She said she’d tried waking her mother with water. Then with cereal. Then by shaking her shoulder.

Nothing worked.

She didn’t know what “unresponsive” meant. She only knew Mommy had been sleeping longer than nighttime was supposed to last.

For two days, she stayed close.

On the third day, one of the twins became so quiet that the girl got scared.

That was why she finally left.

She wrapped both babies, placed them carefully in the wheelbarrow, and started toward the only place she believed could make sick people better.

The receptionist pressed a hand over her mouth for a second, then asked where the house was.

The girl didn’t know an address.

But she knew the road.

She described a mailbox, a long driveway, and the turns she remembered making. An emergency team was called while staff tried to reconstruct the route she’d walked.

Then the girl suddenly reached beneath the collar of her sweatshirt.

A small house key hung from a piece of string.

“Mommy says I can’t lose this,” she whispered.

A paramedic crouched in front of her and held out his palm.

“Can I borrow it so we can go help her?”

The girl stared at the key, then at the hallway where her baby siblings had been taken.

Finally, she pulled the string over her head.

“Bring Mommy too.”
