Leonard Vance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A civil engineer. A partner in a construction firm. The grown man who still called his mother to ask whether the garlic went into the rice before the onion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara had called seventeen times\u2014Leonard, Veronica, his office, the company\u2019s lawyer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time she reached the cemetery, Leonard\u2019s casket was already suspended above the grave. White lilies and huge wreaths surrounded it. Two men in suits kept checking their watches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No wake. No funeral Mass. No chance for Leonard\u2019s relatives from the farm to say goodbye.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything looked arranged to have him buried before noon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veronica stood beside the grave in a fitted black dress and dark glasses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMrs. Clara, please,\u201d she said. \u201cLeonard wanted this done quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara gave a bitter laugh. \u201cMy son wanted to be buried without anybody telling his mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou two hadn\u2019t spoken in months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause you filled his head with poison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several employees from Leonard\u2019s construction firm lowered their eyes. A young lawyer wiped his neck with a handkerchief even though the morning was cool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara looked directly at Veronica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell me how he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWas it an accident?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWas he sick?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Leonard\u2019s business partners glanced toward the exit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara\u2019s voice sharpened. \u201cWhere is the death certificate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veronica stepped closer to the casket. \u201cThe body was badly damaged. You don\u2019t want to see him like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara moved toward her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI cleaned his blood when he split his forehead open as a child. I carried him through fevers. I closed his father\u2019s eyes. A mother knows her son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veronica\u2019s mouth trembled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only once.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara caught it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOpen it, Veronica.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI SAID NO!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her scream stopped the gravediggers. One of them dropped his shovel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawrence Cobb, the senior partner at Leonard\u2019s firm, leaned toward Veronica. \u201cJust do it. People are recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several phones were already raised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veronica looked around and clenched her jaw. \u201cFine. But whatever she sees is on her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funeral director pulled the wreath from the lid and reached for the latches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First latch.<br \/>\nClack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veronica\u2019s fists tightened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second latch.<br \/>\nClack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The young lawyer backed away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third latch.<br \/>\nClack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara whispered a prayer as the lid rose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pungent odor escaped. Veronica covered her nose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside lay a man wearing Leonard\u2019s blue suit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonard\u2019s watch was on his wrist. His wedding ring was on his finger. Around his neck was the St. Christopher medal Clara had given her son when he graduated from college.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the face belonged to someone else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man was older, with a long scar across his cheek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara stared at him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veronica stumbled backward. \u201cThe accident deformed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara reached into the casket and pulled up the man\u2019s sleeve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonard had carried a burn scar on his arm since he was nine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This man had no such mark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara turned on Veronica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere is my boy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veronica spun toward the cemetery path.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara grabbed the back of her dress before she could get away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell me where he is!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veronica jerked free, and her purse slipped from her arm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It struck the ground and burst open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keys. Cosmetics.
