In a blue folder inside the dining room cabinet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father stepped in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor had ordered Emily to rest and remain under observation.<\/p>\n<p>My mother stayed with her.<\/p>\n<p>My father, Daniel, and I returned to the house.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke during the drive.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived, Mrs. Margaret was standing in the kitchen as though nothing had happened.<\/p>\n<p>The table had been cleaned.<\/p>\n<p>The spoiled food was gone.<\/p>\n<p>An air freshener was running.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you finished with the drama?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>He walked straight to the dining room, opened the cabinet, and found the blue folder.<\/p>\n<p>His mother\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s none of your concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it involves my wife, it absolutely is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside were several pages.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t just permission to attend medical appointments.<\/p>\n<p>They were drafts of a broad power of attorney that could allow Mrs. Margaret to handle matters related to Emily\u2019s medical care and, in the event of temporary incapacity, participate with Daniel in decisions involving the baby.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t some secret court order.<\/p>\n<p>It couldn\u2019t magically take Emily\u2019s child away overnight.<\/p>\n<p>But it was far more serious than Emily had been told, and Mrs. Margaret had presented it like routine paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>My father read one section twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy were you trying to get a sick pregnant woman to sign this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Margaret crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause somebody responsible has to think ahead. Emily can barely take care of herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s why you were making her weaker?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t making her weaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel held up the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what is this? \u2018No water.\u2019 \u2018Don\u2019t let her talk to her mother.\u2019 \u2018Get him to sign before she gets better.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I had known her, Mrs. Margaret had nothing ready to say.<\/p>\n<p>Then she began rewriting everything as sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>Emily was \u201cunstable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pregnancy had made her \u201clazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wouldn\u2019t eat unless someone forced her.<\/p>\n<p>Water made her sick.<\/p>\n<p>The fish wasn\u2019t spoiled, only \u201cstrongly seasoned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vitamins caused nausea, so she had removed them \u201cfor her own good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every excuse sounded worse than the last.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom,\u201d Daniel said, his voice breaking, \u201cwhy didn\u2019t you tell me any of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked offended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you work. I handle things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you were helping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I was helping. That girl was taking you away from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence that followed felt different.<\/p>\n<p>This was no longer about food.<\/p>\n<p>It was a confession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really think my baby is a way for my wife to take your son away from you?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Margaret pressed her lips together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only wanted to make sure that child had a real family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis family is Emily and me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what you\u2019re saying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I didn\u2019t know what I was saying every time I told Emily to be patient with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel placed the folder on the table.<\/p>\n<p>My father told us to photograph everything before moving anything else.<\/p>\n<p>We photographed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>The prescriptions.<\/p>\n<p>The pantry.<\/p>\n<p>The refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>Then we found something else.<\/p>\n<p>On the top shelf were containers filled with fresh food.<\/p>\n<p>Grilled chicken.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>Cut fruit.<\/p>\n<p>Yogurt.<\/p>\n<p>Cheese.<\/p>\n<p>Soup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is this for?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Margaret didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened one container.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made this yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the trash, we found packages of expired fish and spoiled vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>The difference was obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel got fresh meals.<\/p>\n<p>Emily got old leftovers covered in salt.<\/p>\n<p>We returned to the hospital with everything.<\/p>\n<p>When Emily heard what the papers actually said, she didn\u2019t cry.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew something was wrong,\u201d she finally whispered. \u201cBut every time I told Daniel, he said his mother had experience and I was just emotional because of the pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lowered his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t forgive you today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hurt him more than any insult could have.<\/p>\n<p>The doctors kept Emily in the hospital for two days.<\/p>\n<p>They gave her fluids, slowly corrected her electrolyte imbalance, and adjusted her diet.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the baby remained stable.<\/p>\n<p>A hospital social worker spoke with Emily privately.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that no one had the right to control her food, her phone, her visitors, or her medical care. She recommended that Emily not return to the house until everything was clarified and that she speak with an attorney about the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Emily agreed.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in months, someone had asked her what she wanted.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to stay with our parents.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked if he could come too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Emily said. \u201cFirst, you need to decide whether you\u2019re going to be my husband or the son your mother controls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no screaming.<\/p>\n<p>Only exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>My parents prepared Emily\u2019s old bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>My mother changed the curtains.<\/p>\n<p>My father put in a new fan.<\/p>\n<p>I stocked a shelf with fruit, crackers, water, and supplements.<\/p>\n<p>The first night home, Emily woke at three in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>I found her sitting in the kitchen crying over a bowl of yogurt and berries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you feel sick?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something inside me broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if it\u2019s three, four, or five in the morning.
