At the bottom lay a Briarwood brochure dated ten years earlier, before Sadie was born.

A note covered the back.

“Jonathan, I visited this school today. The campus is lovely, but the records don’t make sense. Remind me to explain when you return. Love, Rebecca.”

At the time, I had been assigned overseas. Our calls were brief and frequently interrupted, and I could not remember ever discussing Briarwood.

I stared at the note long after midnight, wondering what my wife had discovered and why the school had later placed her signature on our daughter’s application.

The Message in the Music

Sadie woke before sunrise and joined me in the kitchen while I made pancakes. She sat at the counter drawing our old house, then added three figures beside it: herself, me, and a woman in a yellow dress.

“That’s Mom,” she said.

“I know.”

She colored the dress carefully.

“Mrs. Voss said I talk about her so people will feel sorry for me.”

I turned off the stove and sat beside her.

“Missing someone is not misbehavior, Sadie. No teacher gets to tell you what your memories mean.”

After a moment, she reached into her cardigan pocket and removed a folded piece of yellowed paper.

“I found this in the equipment room.”

It was part of an old musical score. Several notes had been circled in pencil, and beneath them were five words in Rebecca’s unmistakable handwriting:

For Sadie, when she is ready.

My daughter watched my face.

“Mom wrote it, didn’t she?”

“Yes, she did.”

Rebecca had been a speech therapist who used music to help children remember words. She often turned note names into simple codes. The circled sequence spelled two words: BADGE CABINET.

Before I could study it further, Detective Bell arrived with Arthur Nolan. The custodian carried an envelope containing maintenance reports from the previous six years. Teachers had repeatedly warned that the equipment-room door could trap someone inside, yet every request had been marked completed even though Reed had canceled the repairs.

Nolan admitted that other children had been placed there as punishment. One boy had experienced a serious breathing emergency, but his family had been persuaded to sign an agreement and transfer him quietly.

Then Nolan showed me a photograph of an antique cabinet behind Briarwood’s auditorium. It contained medals, pins, and ceremonial school badges.

A locked compartment was built beneath it.

When I showed him Rebecca’s musical message, he lowered himself slowly into a chair.

“Your wife visited Briarwood as part of a state education review,” he said. “She was examining arts grants and discovered scholarships listed under families who had never received them.”

“Did she report it?”

“She intended to. A week later, Principal Reed announced that the review had ended.”

Nolan believed the cabinet had once stood in the music department. Soon after Rebecca’s visit, Reed had moved it into the archives and restricted access.

Detective Bell gathered the maintenance records.

“No one approaches that cabinet until we have proper authorization,” she said, looking directly at me.

“Understood.”

As they prepared to leave, Nolan paused.

“Yesterday, before Mrs. Voss took Sadie into the hallway, I heard her tell Reed that ‘the Pierce girl found something.’ I think that is why they put her in that room.”

After the front door closed, I returned to the kitchen and asked Sadie whether she had found anything else at school.

She grew unusually quiet. Then she opened her pencil case and removed a small brass key taped beneath the inner lining. A shield was engraved on its side.

“It was inside a library book,” she explained. “The book had Mom’s name written in it. You are my daughter, and you can always bring me the truth.”

My phone chimed before she could answer.

An email from an address made entirely of numbers contained one photograph. It showed the compartment beneath Briarwood’s badge cabinet standing open. Inside was a blue folder bearing Rebecca’s name, and resting across it was a recent photograph of Sadie entering the school on her first day of kindergarten.

A handwritten message appeared beneath it:

Jonathan Pierce still does not know what truly happened to Rebecca.

A second email arrived almost immediately.

Do not trust the person who brought you the maintenance records.

I looked toward the foyer.

The front door, which I distinctly remembered locking after Detective Bell and Nolan departed, stood open by several inches.

Then I noticed Sadie’s empty hand.

The brass key was gone.

While searching for genuine handwriting to compare, I opened an old box containing Rebecca’s letters and photographs.
