She had worn her faded, worn-out cardigan, nervously attending her grandson’s christening. But to Marcus—my husband of three years—my mother’s “country” presence was a stain on his carefully curated elite aesthetic.

When my mother, flustered by my mother-in-law’s cruel insults, clumsily tried to retreat to a vacant chair, Marcus snapped. Under the shocked gaze of four hundred VIP guests, he aggressively kicked the wooden leg of the chair she was backing into.

Crack.

My mother fell hard onto the freezing marble floor, scraping her forehead painfully. The luxurious ballroom fell dead silent.

“Trash needs to know its place,” Marcus spat, pointing a finger down at my trembling mother. “If you don’t know how to behave in civilized society, get the hell out of my party. You are not going to infect my son with your trailer-park stench.”

The tightrope I had been walking for three agonizing years snapped. To protect this man’s fragile ego, I had buried my true identity as the sole heiress to the multi-billion-dollar Vance Group. I wore thrift-store clothes and ate ramen to discreetly fund his entire tech startup, sacrificing my reality for the illusion of a normal family.

I knelt down, shielding my mother. She gripped my wrist, her calloused hands shaking. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, tears in her eyes. “I embarrassed you.”

Embarrassed.

I slowly raised my head and locked eyes with my husband. I saw no remorse, only a sick satisfaction. He was high on the power of crushing the weak. I stood up.

“Marcus,” I said, my voice sounding like a glacier cracking in the dead of winter. “I am going to give you exactly one opportunity to survive this day. Get on your knees. Apologize to my mother.”

Marcus barked out a massive laugh. “Are you out of your damn mind, Evelyn? You want me to kneel for this old bat? Have you forgotten who pays for the food in your mouth? Every rag on your back is because of me! What right do you have to give me ultimatums?”

“Because of you?” I smiled. It was a terrifying, hollow expression. “It seems three years of acting like a parasite on my dime has actually made you believe your own delusions.”

Before his brain could process the words, I closed the distance between us. I drew my hand back, channeling three years of suppressed rage.

SMACK.

The sound echoed like a gunshot. Marcus’s head violently snapped to the side. He stumbled backward, clutching his rapidly swelling cheek, his eyes wide with shock and dawning horror.

“You hit me?” he stammered in disbelief.

“That was just the appetizer, Marcus,” I whispered, shaking the sting from my knuckles. “Starting right now…”

Part 2

The emergency room corridor smelled heavily of bleach and stale coffee. My mother lay on a narrow gurney, a white gauze pad taped awkwardly over her brow.

“Evelyn,” she murmured, her eyes closed. “You shouldn’t have done that. Couples fight. Don’t throw your marriage away because of an old woman’s clumsiness.”

An invisible fist squeezed my lungs. Even now, bleeding and humiliated by my in-laws, her instinct was to absorb the blame to protect my peace. This was the exact tragic kindness the Sterling family had ruthlessly exploited.

“Mom, rest,” I whispered, kissing her cold hand. “I promise you, no one is ever going to hurt you again.”

Suddenly, the automatic doors of the E.R. violently slid open.

Marcus marched in, flanked by his mother and sister. The bright red imprint of my hand still glowed on his cheek.

“So, you hide in a hospital like a coward?” Marcus roared. “Do you have any idea what you just did? My biggest investors walked out! You are going to march back to that hotel, get on your knees, and beg my mother for forgiveness!”

I stood up, pulling the privacy curtain shut to shield my mother. “Beg for forgiveness?” I repeated, my tone dangerously even.

Marcus’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. He pointed a finger inches from my nose. “I am the man of the house! If you do not apologize right this second, I want a divorce.”

Divorce.

My mother-in-law’s eyes lit up. She shoved past Marcus. “Yes! Divorce! I’ve been sick of your miserable, poverty-stricken face for three years! My son is a visionary executive. Any woman in Manhattan would kill to have him. Especially his new intern, Serena. She is gorgeous, Ivy-educated, and worships the ground he walks on.”

I looked at Marcus. He didn’t deny the affair. He just puffed his chest out with a smug, defiant look.

Suddenly, a profound clarity washed over me. For three years, I had hidden my identity as the sole heiress to the multi-billion-dollar Vance Group. I wore thrift-store clothes and ate ramen to secretly fund his startup, just to experience a “normal” family.
