He looked over at the dance floor, where his sister Kayla spun in an expensive designer gown. His face tightened with pure embarrassment as he looked back at me.<\/p>\n

His shadow lingered under the door frame for a second.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust give us ten minutes, Laura,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t make a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their footsteps faded down the hall as they walked away.<\/p>\n

They had always mistaken my quiet nature for weakness, regularly mocking my simple clothes, my state salary, and the locked briefcase I carried everywhere. Regina called me her little accountant, while Kayla joked that I counted grapes for a living. Derrick always laughed along with them in public and apologized privately later, assuming that made everything alright.<\/p>\n

What they never asked was which government agency I worked for.<\/p>\n

I was a forensic auditor for the state attorney general\u2019s fraud unit. For nine months, I had watched Highland Ridge Vineyard move money through fake vendors, forged payroll records, and shell companies registered to dead relatives. I stayed quiet because Derrick swore he knew nothing about it.<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago, however, I found his signature on every single illegal wire transfer.<\/p>\n

A sudden cramp brought me to my knees on the cold floor. I reached into my bag for the emergency phone I used during field operations, which had only one number saved on it.<\/p>\n

Agent Rachel Stone answered immediately on the first ring.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaura, what is happening?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am locked in the east bridal bathroom at Highland Ridge Vineyard,\u201d I whispered into the phone. \u201cMy water broke, so please send paramedics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice turned sharp and focused. \u201cWho locked you in there?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the locked door and felt completely calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe same people named in our sealed arrest warrant,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

There was a brief pause on the line before she responded.<\/p>\n

\u201cStay conscious,\u201d Rachel said firmly. \u201cWe are on our way for all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

PART 2<\/strong><\/p>\n

The party music outside grew louder as I breathed through another contraction on the bathroom floor. Someone tried the door handle from the outside corridor.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaura?\u201d Kayla called through the wood. \u201cMom said you spilled your drink.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy water broke,\u201d I said firmly. \u201cUnlock the door right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

She paused for a second and then laughed lightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course you would pull something like this today,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I heard Regina whisper nearby, telling Kayla to claim I was drunk so the ambulance sirens would not ruin the party videos.<\/p>\n

My hand held the phone tightly as Rachel listened silently on the open encrypted line, recording every word they said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have always been jealous of me,\u201d Kayla said loudly.<\/p>\n

I almost smiled because even now, they desperately needed an audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am in labor,\u201d I told them clearly. \u201cThis is your last chance to unlock this door.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not threaten us in our own vineyard,\u201d Regina replied coldly.<\/p>\n

That sentence was important because the vineyard was no longer legally theirs.<\/p>\n

Three years ago, the estate almost went under due to heavy debt, and Regina asked me to put the property into a restructuring trust to protect it. She never read the legal documents, which granted me full power to remove management for fraud or endangerment because I had funded the trust with my late mother\u2019s inheritance.<\/p>\n

They assumed the money came from Derrick and believed the paperwork was just a formal gesture from a passive daughter in law.<\/p>\n

Another contraction hit me hard, forcing me to bite my sleeve to keep quiet.<\/p>\n

Outside, the music stopped and an announcer said the cake cutting would start early, which made the crowd cheer and Kayla squeal with joy.<\/p>\n
