Three years ago, she was traveling to a medical appointment when there was a serious road accident. Neither of them came home.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brielle said nothing. There was nothing simple enough to say.<\/p>\n<p>A security employee knocked on the office door.<\/p>\n<p>A man was standing in the alley behind the restaurant, filming the delivery entrance.<\/p>\n<p>The exterior camera zoomed in.<\/p>\n<p>It was Travis.<\/p>\n<p>He held his phone toward the building and smiled as though the evening had unfolded exactly as planned.<\/p>\n<h1>The Evidence They Could Not Hide<\/h1>\n<p>Travis left before Camille could speak with him.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle wanted to follow him, but Everett stopped her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cDo not give him a reaction he can edit into another story,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said.\u00a0<strong>\u201cProtect yourself first.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following morning, Brielle provided the recordings, access records and messages to the proper local authorities. She also requested formal protection from unwanted contact after Darlene sent another message claiming Elodie belonged with her \u201creal family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The process did not produce an immediate dramatic result.<\/p>\n<p>There were interviews, documents, appointments and long hours of waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Camille was honest with Brielle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cLeaving a baby in a storage area was unsafe,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0she said.\u00a0<strong>\u201cYou must acknowledge that clearly. But admitting a poor decision does not require you to accept a false accusation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The words hurt because they were true.<\/p>\n<p>Brielle had been trapped by poverty and fear, but Elodie could have been harmed. Brielle could explain her empty bank account, the sick caregiver and the threat of losing her job. None of those facts erased the danger.<\/p>\n<p>She sat in Everett\u2019s office with Elodie against her chest and quietly wept.<\/p>\n<p>Everett waited until she could breathe normally again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMy sister once told me she felt like every road in front of her had closed,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said.\u00a0<strong>\u201cFor years, I blamed myself for not seeing how overwhelmed she was.
