He had come home eighteen hours early.<\/p>\n
Serena\u2019s fingers loosened around my wrist. I was still on my knees beside the wine she had spilled across the marble floor, one hand gripping a wet cloth, the other pressed beneath my seven-month belly.<\/p>\n
Julian looked at the bucket. Then at my swollen wrist.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe slipped,\u201d Serena said immediately. \u201cNora\u2019s been clumsy lately.\u201d<\/p>\n
I tried to stand before he could see more. A sharp tightening crossed my stomach, and I caught the edge of the table.<\/p>\n
Julian dropped his suitcase and reached me first.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m all right.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was the same lie I had told him on every video call during his six-week trip.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was your wine,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
For one second, the careful expression left her face.<\/p>\n
Julian saw it.<\/p>\n
He also saw the paper on the kitchen counter\u2014the medical order Serena had taken from my purse and left beneath a stack of household bills.<\/p>\n
He read it aloud.<\/p>\n
\u201cLimited activity. No heavy lifting. Avoid prolonged standing due to early contractions.\u201d<\/p>\n
His voice dropped. \u201cWhy is my pregnant wife scrubbing the floor?\u201d<\/p>\n
Serena gave a small, tired laugh. \u201cBecause your pregnant wife has done nothing for six weeks except spend money and make the staff wait on her.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is my home too,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnly because you married into it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Julian turned to her.<\/p>\n
\u201cStep away from my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n
Serena stared at him, but she obeyed.<\/p>\n
He helped me into a chair, then crouched in front of me. When he pushed my sleeve higher, the fresh marks on my forearm showed beside older ones that were already fading.<\/p>\n
His face changed.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow did this happen?\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked past him at Serena.<\/p>\n
\u201cAsk her why I missed my appointment Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n
Julian stood.<\/p>\n
Serena spoke before he could.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe clinic rescheduled.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d said Maria, the household driver, from the hallway.<\/p>\n
Serena whipped around.<\/p>\n
Maria\u2019s hands were trembling, but her voice held.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou told me Mrs. Vance wasn\u2019t allowed to leave without your permission. Then you took the keys.\u201d<\/p>\n
The room went still.<\/p>\n
Serena recovered quickly.<\/p>\n
