Who else has a copy, Xavier? Does your sister have one too, or maybe half the neighborhood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"54\">\u201cDo not be so dramatic, it is only my mother,\u201d Xavier said, looking tired and defeated.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"55\">\u201cOnly? Do you really think that is not enough of a violation?\u201d I asked, my voice shaking with rage.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"56\">Baby Harper started to cry again, and that sound, which had been a mystery earlier, now felt like a humiliation. There was an infant living in my living room, and I was the very last person in the world to know about it.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"57\">Xavier ran a hand through his hair and sighed heavily.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"58\">\u201cI just did not want to involve you in all of this mess,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"59\">\u201cWell, you certainly made things much worse by making me an accomplice without my consent,\u201d I retorted.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"60\">Amanda, with tears streaming down her face, finally found her voice.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"61\">\u201cGeorgia, in my own apartment building, the neighbors were constantly complaining about the crying. The landlord even told me that if the noise did not stop, he was going to call the state social services. I simply did not know what else to do, because Megan was in a treatment center in the next town over, and the baby needed a safe place to stay during the day,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"62\">I looked at her with a mix of fury and genuine vertigo, unable to believe the situation.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"63\">\u201cAnd why did you decide my house was the perfect place for this?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"64\">\u201cBecause she is alone here during the day,\u201d Xavier replied, his voice barely a whisper. \u201cWe knew nobody would bother the baby here, and I foolishly trusted that if we explained it to you later, you would be understanding enough to forgive us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"65\">\u201cOh, right, so you hide the truth, invade my private space, and then expect me to thank you for your \u2018understanding\u2019?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"66\">Xavier finally raised his voice, his patience snapping under the pressure.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"67\">\u201cShe is my niece, Georgia, and she needed help!\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"68\">\u201cAnd this is my house too, Xavier!\u201d I screamed back.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"69\">The silence that followed was heavy and thick, leaving only the sound of the little girl whimpering. Amanda brought the baby a little closer to her shoulder, trying to soothe her with a rhythmic rocking motion.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"70\">\u201cHe is not the one to blame for any of this,\u201d Amanda said.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"71\">She did not say it to defend herself, but rather as a statement of fact, and that somehow disarmed me. I looked at the baby, whose cheeks were flushed red from crying and whose clothes looked a bit worn, and I realized she was just a child caught in the middle of our adult drama.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"72\">\u201cWhere is Megan, really?\u201d I asked, lowering my voice.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"73\">\u201cShe is in a long-term rehab facility,\u201d Xavier said. \u201cShe checked herself back in six weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"74\">\u201cAgain?\u201d I asked, feeling a cold chill run down my spine.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"75\">Amanda closed her eyes and nodded sadly.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"76\">\u201cThis was not the first time she relapsed, and I fear it will not be the last,\u201d she admitted.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"77\">\u201cSo this is not a temporary situation, is it?\u201d I asked, looking between the two of them.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"78\">They looked at each other with an expression of pure guilt that told me everything I needed to know.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"79\">\u201cWhat else are you hiding from me?\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"80\">Xavier walked over to the dining room table and pulled a thick folder out of his briefcase. He did not want to open it, and I felt a pit of dread in my stomach, but I reached out and took the papers myself.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"81\">They were official-looking documents, including evaluations from a medical facility and a series of forms from the family court system. Finally, I found a page with a header that completely took my breath away: Application for Temporary Guardianship.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"82\">I slowly raised my gaze to meet his.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"83\">\u201cWhat is this?\u201d I asked, my voice barely audible.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"84\">Xavier swallowed hard, his face pale.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"85\">\u201cI was just looking into our options,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"86\">\u201cOptions? Options for what?\u201d I asked, feeling like my world was collapsing.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"87\">Amanda began to sob openly.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"88\">\u201cWe were just planning for the worst case, just in case Megan does not recover this time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"89\">\u201cAnd you were planning to decide that without even consulting me?\u201d I asked, my voice breaking.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"90\">Xavier shook his head frantically.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"91\">\u201cNo, I promise I wanted to talk to you about it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"92\">\u201cBefore or after bringing a strange baby into my home for months behind my back?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"93\">Harper suddenly reached out a tiny hand toward me, as if she could sense the tension and was trying to bridge the gap.
