Then the car moved forward.<\/p>\n

The rear camera showed the man lying in the road, barely lifting one hand.<\/p>\n

One officer pressed his lips together.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere did this happen?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNear Lincoln Avenue and Harper Street,\u201d Sarah replied. \u201cI already sent the exact location and a copy of the file.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard stepped back.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho did you send it to?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah made another call and put it on speaker.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecure chamber,\u201d a male voice answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpen emergency protocol,\u201d Sarah said. \u201cEvidence preservation, stolen vehicle, h!t-and-run collision, family coercion, and false statements to law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n

The voice answered immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnderstood, Judge Whitman.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence was brutal.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Helen stopped crying.<\/p>\n

Ashley slowly dropped her hands.<\/p>\n

Richard stared at Sarah as if he had just heard a stranger\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

\u201cJudge?\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

Ashley gave a nervous laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. That\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah pulled an official ID from her wallet and handed it to the officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am Federal Judge Sarah Whitman Hale. I will not involve myself in any legal process connected to my family. I am only reporting the facts as the victim, witness, and owner of the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n

The officer examined the ID.<\/p>\n

Ashley stepped toward her, desperate.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou stole my car.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause Mom said you\u2019d never notice!\u201d<\/p>\n

The words flew out before she could stop them.<\/p>\n

Richard closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Helen turned pale.<\/p>\n

Sarah said nothing.<\/p>\n

She simply played the last recording.<\/p>\n

Her mother\u2019s voice filled the garage:<\/p>\n

\u201cFace it, you have no future anyway. Just tell them you were behind the wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Ashley\u2019s voice followed:<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I did it. And who is going to believe you? You look like a cr!minal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second officer called for backup.<\/p>\n

Ashley looked at her parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo something.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, no one could save her.<\/p>\n

The officer moved toward her with handcuffs.<\/p>\n

And just as Ashley began screaming, Sarah\u2019s phone rang with a call from the hospital.<\/p>\n

The victim had regained consciousness.<\/p>\n
