She is my safe place.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s face turned pale.<\/p>\n<h1>The Brother Who Stayed Silent<\/h1>\n<p>Blake finally stood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cNoah, buddy,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said carefully,\u00a0<strong>\u201cgive me the microphone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Noah took one step back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Blake stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Noah\u2019s voice became smaller, but every word carried across the ballroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou used to be nice to me. You used to ask about my games. You told me I could always count on you. She had silver hair and wore a dark green dress.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was calm, but firm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThat child is right.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another guest slowly stood.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>The applause began softly at first, like people were afraid to admit they should have spoken sooner.<\/p>\n<p>Then it grew.<\/p>\n<h1>The Walk Out<\/h1>\n<p>I climbed the stage and wrapped my arms around Noah.<\/p>\n<p>He dropped the microphone and held onto me like he had been waiting for permission to be a child again.<\/p>\n<p>I kissed his hair and whispered,\u00a0<strong>\u201cYou never had to protect me, baby.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He whispered back,\u00a0<strong>\u201cBut somebody should.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That was the moment I stopped caring what anyone in that ballroom thought of me.<\/p>\n<p>I took his hand and led him down the steps.<\/p>\n<p>Blake stepped toward us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHannah, wait. I should have said something.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I looked at my brother, the boy who once hid from storms in my room, and saw the man who had let my son stand alone before he found his own courage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYes,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0I said quietly.\u00a0<strong>\u201cYou should have.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My mother called my name, but I did not turn around.<\/p>\n<p>Madison said something about ruining her reception.<\/p>\n<p>I kept walking.<\/p>\n<p>Noah held my hand tightly as we passed through the doors and into the cool night air.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the parking lot was quiet.
