PARTY2: Eight years after abandoning her while she was pregnant, the billionaire walked into the hospital where she was… and froze.

“I’ll wait.”

“You cannot enter her life simply to quiet your guilt and then disappear the moment things become difficult.”

“I won’t.”

Before Claire could respond, an alarm sounded from George’s room.

Doctors and nurses rushed down the hallway.

The elderly man had regained consciousness and was struggling to repeat the same sentence.

“Find the little girl… before Vanessa finds the documents.”

Vanessa Carter was Ryan’s older sister.

She had managed the family businesses while Ryan worked in Dallas. Sophisticated, domineering, and obsessed with protecting the family name, she believed that anyone outside the Carter family was interested only in their wealth.

When she arrived at the hospital, she found Claire standing outside her father’s room.

“What are you doing here?”

“I work here.”

Vanessa looked sharply at Ryan.

“You came looking for her again while Dad is dying?”

“That is none of your concern.”

“Anything that affects this family is my concern.”

George regained enough strength to request that Claire be allowed into the room.

The moment he saw her, tears filled his eyes.

“Forgive me.”

Claire moved closer to the bed.

“For what?”

“I knew about Lily.”

Ryan’s face lost all color.

George explained that eight years earlier, he had received a letter Claire had written to Ryan. She had mailed it several weeks after learning she was pregnant, when her fear became stronger than her original determination to remain silent.

George had intercepted the letter.

“Ryan had just signed a contract that could save the company,” he confessed. “I believed that if he returned for you, he would lose the opportunity.”

“You never gave him the letter?” Claire asked.

“No.”

The letter had remained hidden inside a private file.

Years later, George hired a private investigator to make sure Claire and the little girl were safe. He anonymously paid several of Lily’s medical bills and covered part of her school tuition.

“It wasn’t kindness,” he admitted. “It was cowardice pretending to be generosity.”

Ryan stepped away from the bed.

“You stole eight years with my daughter.”

“I was trying to protect your future.”

“She was my future.”

Vanessa entered the room without waiting for permission.

“Dad did what he had to do. Claire decided to have a child without telling anyone. Now she suddenly appears after the company becomes worth millions.”

“I did not appear,” Claire replied. “Ryan came into my hospital.”

“And we’re expected to believe you want nothing?”

Claire lifted her hospital identification badge.

“I worked throughout my pregnancy, completed my specialty training, and raised my daughter alone. I never asked your family for a single dollar.”

George asked for a folder that had been locked inside the safe at his home.

Inside the folder were Claire’s original letter, several photographs of Lily, and documents establishing a trust fund in the little girl’s name.

Vanessa had been appointed trustee.

“The trust contains $35 million,” George explained. “I intended for her to receive it when she was older.”

“Where are the documents?” Ryan asked.

Vanessa did not answer.

George looked at her with visible fear.

“A month ago, I discovered withdrawals that I never approved. That’s why I requested an investigation into the accounts.”

Vanessa claimed the money had been used for investments.

Ryan immediately ordered a complete audit.

The trust fund was almost empty.

More than $28 million had been transferred to a real estate company owned by Vanessa’s husband, Daniel Brooks. The company was close to bankruptcy.

“I was going to replace it,” Vanessa insisted. “It was money Dad had hidden for a girl none of us had even met.”

Ryan slammed his hand against the table.

“She is my daughter.”

“A daughter Claire kept from you.”

“Dad kept her from me too. You stole money that belonged to her.”

Vanessa argued that the trust was not legally enforceable because Ryan had never officially acknowledged Lily as his child.

“Then I’ll take a paternity test today.”

Claire initially refused.

“Lily is not evidence for your family argument.”

“You’re right,” Ryan said. “But I need to protect her legally, even if you decide afterward that I can never see her.”

Claire spoke with her daughter.

“Your father is in Nashville.”

Lily held an oddly shaped tomato in her hands and considered the information in silence.

“Did he know about me?”

“No.”

“Is he a good person?”

“He is trying to become one.”

“Like this tomato.”

“Why is he like the tomato?”

“Because it had a difficult beginning, but it kept growing anyway.”

Lily agreed to meet him at a public park.

Ryan arrived twenty minutes early.

He had spent three nights memorizing facts about sea turtles.

When he saw the little girl walking toward him, his face brightened in a way Claire had never witnessed before.

“Hi,” Lily said. “I’m Lily.”

“I’m Ryan.”

“Mom says you’re my dad.”

“Yes.”

“That is still being evaluated.”

Ryan smiled through his tears.

“That seems reasonable.”

They sat together near the pond.

Lily asked him what he knew about leatherback sea turtles.

“They can dive more than three thousand feet.”

“Good. You studied.”

The meeting lasted forty minutes.

When it was time to leave, Lily did not hug him.

But she asked if he would return the following Saturday.

“I’ll be here.”
