When Gina received a phone as a gift, she asked her grandson, Joshua, to teach her how to use it. However, he was always busy. She kept asking him for help and he kept refusing, until something unexpected happened and he had to turn to Gina, who surprised him.
“Joshua, your grandfather bought me this phone and I have no idea how to use it. My friend, Mrs. Caceres, told me that she read some amazing stories on Facebook. But I don’t know how to open Facebook. Can you help me?” Gina pleaded with her grandson, who was the only person home that day.
Her husband had bought her a smartphone for her birthday, but she had no idea how to use it, so Gina went to her daughter’s house, who lived right next door. Joshua was the only person home that day, and naturally, he asked her.
“I’m sorry, Grandma. I have to go to baseball right now. I can’t,” Joshua replied from the couch, his eyes fixed on his own phone. Then he stood up, grabbed his baseball bag, and left.

“Okay, honey. Maybe later,” Gina told him, and Joshua waved goodbye as he headed out to get to his practice.
Over the next few days, Gina went to see Joshua several times, hoping that he would finally have time to help her. However, the boy always had something else to do.
“I’m sorry, Grandma. I have homework.”
“I’m sorry, Grandma. I’m going to the movies.”
“I’m sorry, Grandma. I’m not in the mood right now.”
Finally, it seemed like Joshua was annoyed with her. “Grandma, you can Google how to do it, or ask Mom. I can’t do it right now. Leave me alone!” he said forcefully, and Gina finally got the hint.
She stopped asking him and tried to do everything she could to learn how to use the phone. She turned to Google as he had suggested, and asked some local kids to show her how to download the Facebook app so she could start following the pages she was interested in.
It was easier than she imagined; she soon connected with friends she hadn’t spoken to in years. “Technology is amazing!” said Gina, who also enjoyed reading short inspirational stories from one particular site.
“Honestly, honey, if I’m not careful, I could spend hours on that phone,” the woman told her daughter, Ana, one day while visiting her. They were in the living room of their home and Joshua was preparing dinner for that night.

“Wow, Mom! You’re more modern than me! I don’t even spend time on my phone. Maybe you should teach me what to do,” Ana laughed with her mother. They continued talking until they heard a loud crash in the kitchen, and suddenly, Joshua was screaming.
“MOTHER!”.
Ana quickly stood up, as only a mother who knows her child is in trouble would do. Gina followed her and discovered that Joshua had accidentally burned both his hands trying to strain the boiling pasta water for dinner.
“Oh, God!” Gina exclaimed.
“Mom, I think we need to go to the emergency room. These burns look really bad,” Ana said, grabbing some ice, putting it on a clean kitchen towel, and covering Joshua’s hands.
“Yes, I drive,” Gina replied.
The doctor said Joshua would be fine after a few days, but his hand would be bandaged until then. Joshua was also advised not to go to school or baseball practices for a while so he could rest and get better faster.
Ana had Joshua’s best friend send her homework so she wouldn’t miss anything during her absence from school. However, Joshua’s friend sent her homework through emails and text messages and Joshua couldn’t handle his phone. That’s when she realized something ironic. She had to ask her grandmother to help her.

He wondered if she would say no to him because he had been so mean and dismissive when he asked her for help. Would she be lenient enough to help him, or would she get back at him with the same treatment?
“Grandma,” he began, hesitantly. Gina had gone to prepare his meal because he wasn’t supposed to be able to use his hands, and she turned around from the kitchen counter, looking at him expectantly. “Can you help me check my email?”
“Oh,” Gina hesitated, and Joshua braced himself for her imminent rejection. But she wiped her hands on a dish towel and walked over to him. “Of course. You have to get your homework, right? Let’s see.”
Gina grabbed her phone and started searching. She went to her email app and with a few prompts downloaded everything he needed to complete his assignments. She then grabbed her laptop and they began working on their homework together. They ate sandwiches in the process, and their afternoon passed quickly.
When they were done, Joshua looked at his grandmother, annoyed with himself. “Grandma, thank you for helping me with this. I was really bad earlier. I should have helped you with your phone when you asked me to,” he apologized.

Gina looked at him adoringly and ruffled his hair. “Yes, you should have, sweetheart. But I’m your grandma. I’ll always be here to help you,” she began, giving him a questioning look. “Now, can you help me make a TikTok video?”
Joshua laughed, and that night they recorded several videos that got hundreds of likes.
