Duvall, who won an Oscar for Tender Mercies (1983), built a career that stretched across seven decades, earning praise for unforgettable performances in classics like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, To Kill a Mockingbird, and many more. His résumé also included iconic roles in The Godfather Part II, The Conversation, Network, and The Natural.
His wife, Luciana, confirmed the news in a Facebook post on Monday morning, writing: “Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.”
She added: “His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented.” Luciana also asked the public for privacy as the family mourns and honors his memory.
Fans quickly flooded social media with tributes. “He was an American legend,” one wrote. Another one said: “He was the most talented and amazing actor of our time. What a legend.” And another one added: “This one hits hard. Such a great man and actor.”
Even in his later years, Duvall didn’t talk like someone ready to slow down. In a past interview while promoting 12 Mighty Orphans, he made it clear retirement wasn’t on his mind.
Asked what he enjoyed most about being 90, he replied, “Love the most? I don’t know if I love any of it, but day to day with my wonderful wife” Luciana Pedraza. He added, “She takes care of me, and I have good friends, and try to work out and keep in some kind of shape.”
RIP to the legend. Forever remembered.
